Wed. August 31, 2005 Hello Folks. I made it. I completed the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, 2,650 miles "Under Human Power" by foot on Mon. August 29, 2005, at 8:22am PDT. The earth did not shake but a quiet feeling of completion did prevail. I was appropriately alone as I clebrated crossing the US-Canada border/PCT Northern terminus. It was a cool and damp morning the result of a predawn rain. One of few rains that I experienced this leg(summer). I took a few pictures and minutes of videos via a makeshift tripod of trekking poles, tree branch and duct tape. I'm now in Hope, BC, Canada and headed back to US by bus tommorrow. Surprise Surprise I'm having a little hip pain so will rest up with friends in Seattle. Then maybe hike a little in Cascade NP. See you back in the states. All the Best. I met Darrell on the trail yesterday, August 16, about noon, near Pete Lake in Washington's Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area. He is doing fine and looking forward to getting to Canada. We hiked and chatted together for about half and hour. I was only out on a day hike, but on Aug 4-8, I hiked the PCT from Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass. It's a great trail. I admire your enthusiasm and determination. GO DARRELL!

We are confident that you know just how much you can do and cannot do...and are rooting for you by the day and the hour, but most of all whenever the challenge gets heavy...

Hi Darrell,
Such hard work to put together still another leg of this amazing journey! This is something we mortals can't fathom. Walking up stairs sometimes seems a challenge to some of us and here you are, Darrell, mounting and descending mountains, dealing with everything ma nature has to offer - good and bad. What remarkable vistas you've captured in your photos. By themselves, they're incentive enough to keep moving on to your destination.
It might be interesting for those of us following you progress, getting some insight to your camping experiences. What locations do you seek? What time of day do you settle down for the night? When do you rise? Do you ever keep going at night? What are the major challenges you face camping, other than bears? What do you eat? How often? How much?
Maybe Betsy can fill us in with some of that. We salute you both, as of course this is definitely a team effot.
Love from Richmond! Andy

WOW !! I apparently missed the July 9th entry....don't know how that slipped by me...We now have at last caught up with you...Darrell, you're walking too fast for us, wait up a minute !!! (Just kidding big grin) I admire your fortitude and stick-to-it-ness, plus having to fight off the microscopic "winged" fauna. Do they crave insect repellent ? Or are they just too temped by anything warm-blooded, despite the taste of "Off" ?? I guess their numbers are proof you are not walking through dry spots but rather through humid, high forests and lake areas.
Your pictures are absolutely beautiful ! I will post them in our kitchen to give us the impression we were there with you !
The hearts around here still beat for you...especially since I just found your pancake recipe (which had somehow blown under the fridge and which I had been searching for for months...doing a little spring cleaning, late, here...)

Christian's mother: Did you take a day off per week? Or every few days?

You might be interested in knowing that pancakes has multiple functions. If they're good, just eat them. However, when I was at Middlesex School (prep school in Concord, MA) The quality of pancakes the kitchen turned out left plenty to be desired.

Some of us would sneak a couple of pancakes out of the dining hall, press them between a couple of books, and a week or so later addressed them, put stamps on them and mailed to wherever we liked. Some recipients actually thought this unique style of postcard to be pretty comical.

So if you can't eat them all, there are other uses.

Good luck with the challenge. Good luck with the last 121 miles. Lisa Rae and I are rooting 110% for you!

Hi Family and friends
Made it to Etna, CA. Mile 1600 from the Mexican border and 900 miles from where I started this second leg in Kennedy Meadows. Also just 121 miles and seven days to go. Etna summit to Seiad Valley 57 miles then 36.5 to the California/Oregon Border then 28 to I-5 south of Ashland, Oregon. My goal for this year complete: The length of California plus 28 miles of Oregon. Estimated arrival date at I-5 Oregon Wednesday Oct 6th, 2004. States border crossing estimated Oct. 4th or 5th. Pancake challenge in Seiad Valley Sat. Oct. 2nd. Oh the Challenge, five 12oz pancakes all at one sitting. I hear only 7 or 8 have met the challenge. We will see if I'm up for it. The weather this last week has been brilliant. Clear, sunny, cool breeze, true autumn days. Lets hope it lasts for one more week. Have been in and out of different wilderness areas: Trinity Alps, Russian, and now the Marble Mountains. Northern California's sections of the PCT, P,Q,& R are truly beautiful but they ar

Hi Folks, well I made it to Chester, CA yesterday, 9/12/04 and am taking a zero day. I'm at a branch library as I type. Received all boxes and remailed my bounce box to Dunsmuir, CA my next full day off, 9/22/04. I want to thank all persons that have log in, or supported me in thought or deed. I want like to especially thank and give a cyber hug to my wife, Betsy. Head logistics officer, love of my life, and best friend. Without her support and love, I'm not sure whether I would have been able to pull this off to date. A day off the trail; in yesterday list making prestop hitchhike 8 miles, motel room, sort dirty clothes, shower 25 minutes, use a complete small bar of soap, dinner, Laundromat, grocery one of many. next day PO boxes, sort food, massage first of trip, mail box dinner. Well get to go. Love to all. Darrell

It's what's commonly known as a sign diaper in certain parts of rural California.

Darrell, sorry I'm not with you for the beginning of part 2, but I promise we'll hook up somewhere along the trail.

Best of luck.

( I am a "Walker", after all... ha ha...)

Or, maybe it's a place where babies can leave their PARENTS, for a break !!

Maybe it's the local "Lost and Found" device... Love, Kathy

It's a place where people can leave their babies while they take a break.

Actually, it is the inside of some old thing, now sagging down into disrepair.

Hi Darrell,
Or should I say Gramps! Congratulations! Betsy just announced the birth of Hayden. We're all proud for you.

Now, my guess for the mystery photo is that the post seems to be able to hold food supplies and water such as the trail angels would use to supply hikers. Am I right? Probably not, but seems like it's a possibility.

We miss you but hope that your next venture on the trail goes as uneventfully and with as much reward to you as possible.

Love, Andy

OK, so the pouch is hanging BEHIND a sign on a post........no doubt, it is indispensable to know what aforesaid sign says.....maybe it's a nest to gently place iddy-biddy-tweetie-pies that might have had the misfortune of falling out of their nests, along the trail ???? Or maybe it belongs to a kangaroo who lost his/her pouch (remember "Katie No-Pockets" ?). I give up... (for today...)

Wow, this is what ALL computer logs, site, reference pages, etc. should be like: S I M P L E !! Especially for the " highly computer-challenged", like us...GREAT work, Bets; GREAT aim and vision, Darrell !!! Hanging around the apartment on crutches right now, I'm elated to have your beautiful horizons to contemplate ! I say the pouch is a Suggestion Box......No, seriously, it's either for the Water-Leaver-Offer or for "trail trash"... Right ?

Betsy, I have to first say that your directions to the website are very clear and show evidence of what a great computer teacher you are. All scenarios are included for one to access the website easily. The pictures are great and help me to travel with Darrell with wonderment of his goal. I think the mystery picture is a feeding pouch for animals or people along the trail. Linda
